the dissonance in dear evan hansen

i’m too sleepy to write out a full analysis at the moment but here’s my thesis: the actual plot is focused on

  • the consequences evan suffers for puppetting a suicide victim, which at first he feels forced to do because of his anxiety
  • how when evan’s fake story about him and connor touches connor’s family and millions of people, he begins reaping the benefits
  • how evan’s lie is ultimately a way to cope with his own suicide attempt

but despite all of this darkness, which is sometimes played up for comedy, it’s marketed solely as a musical telling you that you are not alone, you will be found, and all is new. it’s so wild to me
